Care of Iron Bamboo

Fencer Says: Bamboo structures require no routine maintenance outdoors. Bamboo that has not been varnished weathers to a uniform silvery gray. This weathering occurs faster in salt air and more slowly in shade. Weather can be retarded with an occasional application of vinyl floor wax. Click title for more information.

Any stain or wood preservative will restore weathered bamboo to its approximate original luster and will prolong its life. In order to determine whether the bamboo has weathered sufficiently to take the stain, clean a small spot and touch it with the stain. If the bamboo absorbs the stain, continue to apply the stain to the entire structure. If the stain puddles like water on a waxed automobile, the bamboo is not sufficiently weathered.

Always wash the bamboo with a soft bristle brush and soap or detergent before applying a stain. Pressure washing at 1200 psi or less is another effective and quick washing method for bamboo.

Our furniture is usually varnished or coated with polyurethane and should require no maintenance.
