Learning the Terms

Fencer Says: It is helpful to use defined terms when talking about anything. For fencing the terms are pretty easy. Posts are vertical members, usually placed in the ground or attached to a deck or other surface. Posts support the fence panel. The rails are attached to the posts. Rails are horizontal members attached to the posts. Rails support pickets. Pickets are vertical members that do not support the panels. Pickets may be diagonal rather than vertical. When diagonal, pickets add to the stiffness of the panel.
