Boat Spars Information

Fencer Says: The cost of the poles is $2.50 per foot and we can provide length up to 23'. The poles are 2" in diameter, they are first cuts and fully dried, cured, and polished. They are stiffer than Sked 80 1.25" aluminum or 1.5" dia. Sked 40 aluminum often used on Junk Schooners. The maximum bow on a 21 foot pole is 3" or less.

Cutting, drilling, and other tasks are explained upon request. For larger rigs where longer and or larger diameters may be needed, I will calculate for you the diameter of the bamboo to match any metal pipe you might be using.

Give a call and we will respond with recommended diameters, cost, and delivery schedule. Call David (the sailor in the crowd) at 800-775-8641.

Fencer Says: The extremely effective sails of Chinese Junks and Sampans use battens originally of bamboo. They are light, very rigid, and durable. I believe that most of the rigs in the US have been using aluminum battens which are heavier and not as stiff.

We invite you Chinese rig sailors to return to the better way and save your back on the halyard, have less weight aloft, improve the sailing quality of the boat, and return to nature. We treat the bamboo with boron salts to eliminate insect attack which is very important in warm climes. This pressurized Boucherie processing must be done immediately after cutting while the culm is fresh and green. We use the best bamboo you can get for the job. It is the super hard and strong temperate bamboo Phyllostachys nigra "Henon".
