I cannot decide on a rolled fence. How do they differ?
The champion of all rolled bamboo fences is the Good Neighbor Fence. It is made of 3/4" diameter bamboo is woven by machine in five lines of heavy copper clad steel wire. It is 6 to 7 feet tall and weighs about 77 lbs for a length 8' long. It is more expensive, but much stronger than any of the other rolled fences. It has a lifetime of 20 years if properly installed.
Fern is chocolate in color and has absolutely no nodes. The stems are not absolutely straight. The stems are rock hard. The fence is formed by clustering bunches of stems together and weaving them. The wires (identical in willow, pine, and bamboo stick as well) are relatively heavy compared to the good side of the reed fence. Reed fence has a fine wire that loops around the culms and a heavy wire that is straight on the opposite side. I do not know how long fern will last. I have very little experience with it. I suspect it will weather to a silvery gray depending on the amount of sun, like everything else. I am certain the stems will not take paint. Reason to use? Exotic color and shape. 70 lbs. for 15' roll.
Dwarf pine is fuzzy in texture and very dark. Probably has lifetime of reed fence. 6 to 8 years if properly installed. Reason to use. Dark fuzzy look. 70 lbs. Will be available in late April.
Reed is just that. It can be crushed between thumb and forefinger. Very good quality control and made in Hungary. The fine wire on one side almost disappears when viewed more than 10 feet away. It is light and easy to handle and ship. It is the only woven fences in 25' lengths as well as 15'. 15' length weighs 40 lbs. Lifetime 6-8 years if battened up. (see recommended installation on web site.) Opaque giving 85% to 90% when viewed perpendicular to the plane of fence. 100% when viewed at 20 degrees or more. Reason to use? color and ease of use, good opacity.
Willow looks like grayish and brown tree bark. It varies a lot in diameter. Weighs 70 lbs. Probably lasts 8-10 years in most environments. Not as opaque as reed. Reason to use? Somewhat wild look. Relatively long life.
Bamboo Stick fence. Machined one half inch slats that are 1/8th inch thick. Very uniform look with skin side showing a little rustic. Opposite side is machine white wood look. Recommend that waterproof stain be applied to back side to improve longevity which should be about 10 years. Opacity about 85% at 90 degrees and up to 45 degrees. Beyond that, more opaque. Weighs 70 lbs. Reason to use? Look and least expensive bamboo product per foot. (Note: reed is not bamboo)
Bamboo Twig fence. This is a very unusual fence that is very dense. It is made from the branch twigs of bamboo bundled together and woven with galvanized wire every 4". It is 6' high and 15' long. It has a dark appearance because of the natural mildew and shade within the bundle. It is relatively heavy (70 lbs for 15'). It attaches easily to chain link fence and can be applied to board or other fences by wiring it or stapling. I also recommend battening it at top and bottom as with reed and other rolled fences, (excluding GNF).
