Can you treat poles to meet fire code for use in restaurant?
Is bamboo capable of being fire retarded?. The answer is yes. Which of about five different treatments is best to used depends on the application and on the state of the bamboo.
-Growing green bamboo is a fire barrier automatically.
-Whole dry bamboo without splits can be surface treated for interior use by coating with a fire retardant varnish.
-Half rounds and whole round bamboo with end to end relief splits can be treated with water soluble products that soak into the bamboo from the softer inside. These treatments do not work on whole waxy skinned bamboo. Such a cut is recommended for indoor ceilings anyway since the likelihood of the bamboo splitting eventually will be almost 100% for diameters greater than one inch.
-If the septum are punched out the soak from the interior is feasible, but expensive and likely to trap larger quantities of the material in the internodes, hence it is seldom recommended.
-We definitely can treat bamboo bricks either before or after they have been stained. They have the waxy skin removed in all cases.
Fire treatment normally costs on the order of $1 per square foot, but this is a very squishy number.
Lastly, our bamboo bricks are another great solution. Fire retardant to Class A flame spread can be added by the customer at the site or Bamboo Fencer can provide the bamboo bricks with retardant for an additional $0.50 per brick.
Bamboo Fencer can provide at the customers request a certificate that identifies the retardant, gives the test results that the retardant manufacturer gave us, and certify that it has been applied in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
