What are some options for making a bamboo wall in my home?

There are two reasonably economical options. The first is to cover the wall with bamboo slat wall coverings. These come in units 47” tall and 9’ wide. These can be affixed to your wall either by gluing them in place or captured on the ends with molding.

An alternative is to install bamboo half-rounds attached to the wall by one of three methods: capturing their ends with molding, predrilling holes, then using screws or finishing nails (the fasteners are then sometimes covered with another bamboo strip), or gluing. In the latter case the inside of the half-rounds should first be cleaned, dried, and filled with architectural foam such that they can be glued to the ceiling or walls easily with latex based industrial adhesive (anything else will dissolve the foam).

I recommend that you paint the wall the color of the bamboo so that any spaces between the poles aren’t noticeable. Pre-drilling and screwing works best if you have wood to attach the poles to. Gluing works best for drywall. We can do the foam for you, or you can do it yourself.

The latter alternative requires that you decide on the diameter of half-round you want and then determine how many half-rounds you would need to cover your whole wall. Divide this number by two to calculate the number of bamboo poles you would need to order. 8’ bamboo poles can be shipped by UPS. They can be ripped at home using a table saw. Make a vee jig and use a catcher; be sure not to twist them as you rip them. Always be careful not to stand behind a pole being ripped.

If you want a tropical look, but not necessarily bamboo, you may also consider using one of our woven fence products as wall covering. Like the slat wall covering, these are best attached with molding at the edges.
