How well can bamboo fencing withstand desert climates?

The UV is the main worry. It will weather any wooden product quickly in desert climates. This means the wood will turn to a silvery grey quickly. Also, the natural wax and oils are destroyed so that the wood (bamboo) absorbs moisture which then enables the growth of bacteria and other stuff that causes rot.


As far as different wood products go, bamboo will withstand desert climates as well as cedar and better than fir or spruce. To protect it, coat your fence with any deck sealer. The best that I have found is the Cabots UV resistant clear stain. Even though it may still weather grey, it does not fall apart.
